"Strike first, ask questions later"

The Scandinavian Defense (1.e4 d5) is the most direct response to 1.e4 — Black immediately challenges White's central pawn. After 2.exd5 Qxd5, the queen comes out early but finds a safe, active home on a5. From there Black develops rapidly with ...Nf6, ...Bf5 or ...Bg4, and ...c6, building a rock-solid position with no theoretical burden. The Scandinavian is the perfect beginner weapon: simple plans, quick development, and no sharp theory to memorize.
