"Sacrifice a pawn for two open files and permanent queenside pressure"
The Benko (Volga) Gambit answers 1.d4 with 1...Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5!?, offering a pawn to rip open the a- and b-files. In return Black gets the easiest plan in chess: fianchetto the bishop, castle, and pile every heavy piece onto White's queenside. The pressure never expires — even deep into endgames the a2/b2 pawns stay chronically weak. This engine-checked course covers the Fully Accepted main line (the King Walk and the Fianchetto systems), the accepted sidelines, and every declined try, so you always know the plan.

Free sample: the main line, move by move
- 1. d4 — 1.d4 — the queen's pawn. Black is about to make it a fight.
- 1... Nf6 — 1...Nf6 — flexible development, controlling e4.
- 2. c4 — 2.c4 — White claims the center.
- 2... c5 — 2...c5 — the Benko move-order, striking at d4 and inviting 3.d5.
- 3. d5 — 3.d5 — White grabs space and closes the center. Now the gambit lands.
- 3... b5 — 3...b5!? — the Benko (Volga) Gambit. Black offers the b-pawn to blow open the queenside.
- 4. cxb5 — 4.cxb5 — accepting. Anything else lets Black recapture with a free game (see Chapter 3).
- 4... a6 — 4...a6 — the heart of the gambit: Black offers a SECOND pawn to rip open the a- and b-files. This is the whole idea, not a sideline.
- 5. bxa6 — 5.bxa6 — the Fully Accepted Benko: White takes the second pawn too.
- 5... Bxa6 — 5...Bxa6 — regaining one pawn and developing the bad bishop to its best diagonal, staring at f1 and the whole queenside.
- 6. Nc3 — 6.Nc3 — natural development, controlling e4 and d5.
- 6... d6 — 6...d6 — the Benko/King's-Indian center: it locks c5 in place and opens the g7 diagonal for the fianchetto bishop.
- 7. e4 — 7.e4 — White builds the big center and, crucially, opens the a6-f1 diagonal for Black's bishop.
- 7... Bxf1 — 7...Bxf1! — the key trade: Black swaps the 'bad' light bishop for White's good one and, best of all, robs White of the right to castle.
- 8. Kxf1 — 8.Kxf1 — forced. The king must recapture, and now it has to walk to safety by hand.
- 8... g6 — 8...g6 — preparing the fianchetto that gives Black's whole setup its backbone.
- 9. g3 — 9.g3 — White prepares Kg2, tucking the king onto the long diagonal.
- 9... Bg7 — 9...Bg7 — the bishop points straight down the a1-h8 diagonal at White's queenside, reinforcing every pawn break.
- 10. Kg2 — 10.Kg2 — the king finally reaches relative safety. But it cost White three tempi and the h1-rook is still asleep.
- 10... O-O — 10...O-O — Black is already castled and fully coordinated. This tempo count is the gambit's compensation made visible.
- 11. Nf3 — 11.Nf3 — developing and connecting toward the center.
- 11... Nbd7 — 11...Nbd7 — the queen's knight heads to d7, eyeing e5 and b6 and clearing the way for ...Qa5 and ...Rfb8.
- 12. Re1 — 12.Re1 — the h1-rook joins the game at last.
- 12... Qa5 — 12...Qa5 — the model Benko queen post: it pressures a2, supports ...Rfb8, and keeps an eye on the c3-knight.
- 13. h3 — 13.h3 — a useful luft, stopping any ...Ng4 ideas.
- 13... Rfb8 — 13...Rfb8 — the second rook swings to the b-file. Black has the two open files, the better minor pieces, and a plan that plays itself: pile on b2 and a2 while White nurses an extra pawn he can never use.
